Fire Retardant Fabrics – Queensland

Fire Retardant External Fabrics

The Grenfell Towers in London sent shockwaves around the world following the tragic fires over multiple floors. Australia’s building code tightened to reduce the risk of similar events in Australia. There are many external awnings on or around the structures of Class 2 to 9 buildings that are not in compliance with modern standards. Some Class Two through Nine buildings with fabric awnings on their exterior were asked to remove them or face being condemned. Body corporates have hesitated with their approval, and in many cases, they have been forced to remove these fabric-style awnings.

Some regulations govern the attachment of Awnings, External Blinds and Shutters on Class Two through Nine buildings, which effectively prohibits the use of traditional fabrics above the ground floor. Class Two through Class Nine buildings incorporate all possible types of high-density and commercial buildings, including multiple occupancy units, hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, Universities, offices, shopping complexes, etc.

We Have a Solution For Fabric Awnings on Commercial Buildings

Blind Makers has been working with industry bodies and fire engineers to work around the problems associated with the installation of these types of awnings and have a working solution.

If you have a Body Corporate or a Client that needs support to overcome some of these problems, Blind Makers can help you.

Performance Solution

The Performance Solution process is used to satisfy Certifiers and Body Corporates that the fire risk is ameliorated. This effectively means that if these products are to be installed on the upper floors of multi-storey residential and other commercial buildings, each project needs to be assessed by a Fire Engineer and certified as presenting little or no fire risk. This process is described in the NCC as a “Performance Solution”.

We have worked closely with the “Blind Manufacturers Association of Australia” and a national fire consultant to come up with a “Performance Solution” for fabrics that comply with the stringent results of AS 1530 part II and Part III fire tests that can be applied with delegated approval to a particular project with the involvement of a certifier. There is no 100% guarantee that a certifier will accept a Performance Solution; therefore, it is important that your certifier be consulted prior to making any commitment. If your certifier is happy to accept our solution, we can provide you with a Performance Solution for just $500.

If you have purchased awnings from one of our businesses in the past, we may be able to supply you or your clients with fire-rated certificates that comply with the new code. We have a wide range of products that might suit your client’s needs if you require a substitute or replacement. If you require a new fabric skin to comply, then we also might be able to help you.

We have approved fire-rated fabrics that can be adapted to any of our range of Fabric Awnings or Call Us Today: (07) 53273402 to get a customised Quote.
